What Do Pot Seeds Look Like?

Cannabis cultivation, whether for recreational or medicinal purposes, has really become immensely popular over the past decade or so.  And in fact, in order for it to even be possible, it starts with a crucial element: the seeds.  For any grower, newbie or experienced, understanding what pot seeds look like and how to identify high-quality seeds is a fundamental step in the cultivation process.

That’s why we’ll be providing a simple guide to the physical characteristics of pot seeds, the different types of seeds available, and tips for identifying high-quality seeds.

The Anatomy of Pot Seeds

“Pot seeds” is another colloquial term for cannabis seeds, specifically referring to seeds used for growing marijuana, which is often colloquially referred to as “pot”.  Just like with the terms “weed seeds” and “cannabis seeds”, “pot seeds” designate the seeds of the Cannabis sativa plant that’re cultivated to produce marijuana plants.  These seeds contain the genetic material necessary for growing cannabis plants with various characteristics, including different levels of cannabinoids like THC and CBD, as well as different flavors, aromas, and effects when consumed.

Now, pot seeds are the embryonic form of the cannabis plant, encapsulated within a protective outer shell.  These seeds contain all the genetic material necessary to grow into a mature cannabis plant.

Weed Seeds Key Features

To identify and understand pot seeds, it’s important to look at several key features that can determine the type, health, etc.

Size and Shape

Pot seeds are typically small, about the size of a peppercorn or slightly larger, measuring between 2 to 5 millimeters in diameter.  They’ve a teardrop shape, with one end being slightly more pointed and the other more rounded.  This distinctive shape is one of the first indicators of a cannabis seed.

Color and Appearance

Healthy pot seeds exhibit a range of colors, from dark brown to light gray. Some seeds may display speckled or striped patterns, often referred to as “tiger stripes”.  These stripes can be dark brown or black and provide a good indication of the seed’s maturity and viability.  The presence of these patterns suggests that the seed has reached full maturity and is likely to be viable.

Texture and Hardness

The surface of pot seeds is generally smooth, though it may have slight ridges or texture due to natural patterns on the seed coat. High-quality seeds have a firm and hard outer shell.  When pressed gently between your fingers, a good seed should not crack or deform easily.  Soft or easily crushed seeds are often not viable and should be avoided.

Glossy Sheen

Mature pot seeds often have a slight glossy sheen to their surface.  This sheen is a sign of a healthy seed coat and indicates that the seed has been properly stored and maintained. Seeds that appear dull or have a matte finish may be older or improperly stored.

Characteristics of High-Quality Pot Seeds

Identifying high-quality pot seeds is crucial for achieving a successful grow.  Here are some characteristics that distinguish good seeds from poor ones:

Hardness

As mentioned earlier, high-quality pot seeds have a hard outer shell.  This hardness protects the seed’s genetic material and ensures its viability during the germination process.  When gently squeezed, a good seed should not break or deform easily.

Color

The color of a pot seed is a strong indicator of its health. Mature seeds are typically dark brown or gray and may have a glossy sheen.  Immature seeds are usually green or white and lack the characteristic stripes or marbling.  Avoid seeds that are pale or light in color, as they are unlikely to germinate successfully.

Size and Weight

While pot seeds can vary in size, larger seeds often have more stored energy, which can contribute to a more robust start during germination.  Heavier seeds also tend to be more viable, as they indicate a well-developed embryo inside.  However, size alone should not be the sole criterion for judging seed quality; other factors like color and hardness are equally important.

Float Test

Yes, a simple and quick test to determine seed viability is the float test. Place the seeds in a glass of water and observe their behavior.  Viable seeds will typically sink to the bottom within a few hours, while non-viable seeds will remain floating.  Keep in mind that this test is not foolproof and should be used in conjunction with other methods.

Understanding What Pot Seeds (Should) Look Like Can Help You Prior to Getting Your “Grow On”

Understanding what pot seeds look like and how to identify high-quality seeds is fundamental for successful cannabis cultivation.  By paying attention to the size, color, texture, and hardness of the seeds, growers can ensure they start their grow with the best possible chance for a healthy and productive harvest.

Plus, selecting the right type of seed for your needs and storing them properly can further enhance your growing experience.  Also, take note that pot clone seeds don’t exist; instead, you’ve either pot seeds or pot clones.  Seeds and clones look distinctly different, with seeds resembling small hard pellets and clones looking like small cuttings from a plant.

So, whether you’re a novice or an experienced grower, the knowledge of pot seeds is a valuable tool in achieving a bountiful and rewarding cannabis crop.
